Matches are now coming thick and fast, and on this cold wet and windy morning it was time for a trip to Tonbridge for the die-hard faithful. If Deano had known beforehand how things were going to go, he would have turned off the alarm clock and gone back to sleep! Both teams were missing players and had to re-jig the line-up, which meant Leon took the place of Gareth in his debut performance as the ‘cat’, and it was Harry’s turn to go and see his Gran - I’m sure he won’t mind me sharing that with you!

(Well it did for me anyway) The sun was out on a lovely March morning and Deano seemed to be up for this match and lead the boys on a vigorous warm up it tired me just watching them poor Dave had to take a seat he couldn’t take it anymore and the parents well they just kept on chatting, it’s amazing what you can find out if you just listen
Fireflies win lively encounter against a spirited Mosquito’s

With the leagues strange fixtures the two Grasshoppers sides had to play out a fixture against one another, those who travelled down to West Park witnessed an excellent game. The Pre Match build up saw both managers eyeing the team sheet for ringers and each trying to bluff and double bluff the other with last minute team selection… the passing and movement of both sides was a joy to behold, The impressive Caira marshalled the back line keeping the free scoring Ben L to a few chances, She only let him out of her pocket for a moment to get a breath of air and he had scored 2 goals and one of those 1 from the penalty spot but she showed self disciplined and led as a leader should in her man marking role. The Mosquito’s took the lead when Dominic broke free and applied a neat finish passed the disappearing dive of the keeper. The game was played in Great Spirit and it wasn’t long before Ben L equalised as the game ebbed and flowed, both teams had chances to steal a victory but the winning goal came by way of a last minute penalty that Ben L dispatched for the Fireflies to keep the winning run going. But the game was real winner with both teams playing brilliantly well done everyone

Mosquito’s earn battling 2-2 draw
Posted by editor in : Fixtures, Matches , add a commentThe Second of our matches in the Weald league saw local rivals Marefield travel down to West Park for a lively encounter.
The Match kicked off with all the play in the Maresfield half, where the passing and movement of the Mosquito’s was far too quick for Maresfield to handle little 1-2’s and wall passes made light work of the Mares back line created numerous chances and we soon took the lead when Dominic found the back of the net much to the joy of the home supporters. The passing throughout the team was quick and effective with Aaron making some great challenges and James P working hard to make things happen. On a rare break before half time Maresfield managed to equalise giving Tom Wickens some work to do for the first time during the match.
Second half started with Maresfield finding new found confidence as they started brightly, putting pressure on to the Mosquito’s. Against the run of play Dominic managed to scored yet another to put us back in the lead 2-1.again we looked to pass the ball around after making a number of changes and Callum Smith showed bags of energy has he tirelessly ran up and down closing down the Maresfield Players and Ciara showed what a class player she is by leading by example never giving anything up and fighting for every ball however, Maresfield did manage to fight back well enough to gain the second equaliser.
Fireflies leave Wood burnt

In a rearranged match from a few weeks ago the Visitors from Ashurst Wood arrived to the fortress that is west park to play the second of the Fireflies league matches to find 2 matches already underway mean, After a quick warm up at a training ground at Harland’s the Fireflies players jumped in the cars for a quick dash to the pitch only to find the visitors had arrived early to soak up the atmosphere that goes with a venue such as ours.
As Martin hastily put the goals up with Jackie and Darren the boys kept warm with a keep ball exercise, not the keep ball we normally do in training they had managed to steal a ball from the under 11’s who had played before and their manager was chasing them round the pitch trying to get it back
With Callum Horscroft nursing a damaged arm Leon Wolvey made his debut in goal, with Ben L also missing with a damaged knee the Gaffer had to tinker with the selection to get the right balance. Ross Wickham was welcomed back into the fold after a long absence and went straight into the starting line up alongside the dependable Aiden, With a Midfield of Love, Broad and Hoskins leaving Danny Stiller up front the Gaffer AKA (Claudio Ranieri) looked as happy as could be expected.
The game was only seconds old when the energy of Eddie Love took him past 2 players and delivered a whipped cross into the heart of the Wood defence only for Danny to have his shot blocked by the on rushing keeper.
George was controlling the centre mid like a general on the battle field; time after time he picked his passes to find either Love or Hoskins both in acres of space. The dancing feet of Louis dazzled the visitor’s midfield as he looked to create chance after chance when his shot cannoned of the back of the wood no.4 Danny was at hand to lob the ball over the defenders and the keeper who had come out into no man’s land. The manager noticed that George was struggling to move and keep going down holding his right foot not another injury he was heard muttering, Broad made way for Aaron Streeter who went on to do a man marking job on the tricky Ashurst wood no.8 the managers instructions were simple keep him out the game and we should win the match, and to be fair to Aaron he stayed as close to him as Sean does to his Wallet(never left his side
With Ross and Aiden at the back Leon had very little to do, the defence dominated and snuffed out the nearest sign of danger before the keeper could flap at it.
Eddie Love showed an eagerness to go past his man and was rewarded when a trademark run found Danny who duly added his second not bad finishing for a defender.
He would have had his third just before half time but the defenders out stretched leg got the final touch and that’s how the teams finished at half time.
Ashurst wood came out for the second half and battled well, not really creating any chances but closed down the ball well and limited the Grasshoppers shooting opportunities. The game finished 3-0 but they never had a shot on goal a good team performance and a big thanks to the parents for helping with the hectic schedule

On a surprisingly sunny morning the visitors arrived with a spring in their steps, The result in the previous match giving them confidence (they beat second place Sevenoaks), And with the Home sides stretched for players and down to the bare bones with Justin and Harry both playing for Brighton’s performance Centre against Fulham and Dave taking time out, away from the media speculation about his future with the club. rumours are rife that Brighton are sniffing round for a new first team manager and with a record like Dave’s who can blame them so it was left to Darren to take the helm and try to keep up this impressive run of 14 consecutive wins on the bounce.
Both managers having to make some positional/tactical changes it was interesting to hear what Deano had to say in the after match press conference.
"we started the 1st game very strongly and had some brilliant interplay I’d had given Oscar new instructions and he was seeing more of the ball, the boys a genius he was quoted as saying reminds me of me in my hay day, great feet, strokes the ball around and has a rocket shot ! at this point he was given a nudge by Darren as he was day dreaming, Not taking anything away from Oscar who can do all of those things that Deano cant and he should stick to growing his Bobby Charlton coomb over the nearest he’ll get to looking like a good player(we love you still Deano). But back to the game and once again it was the support of Oscar that created some brilliant opportunities for Luke Bartlett Timmy and Jack, the defence was solid and with Luke Emsley man marking the lone striker and Callum Harper stepping in front of him to cut out the ball through, we again played some lovely football and the passing and movement was a joy to watch we dominated the game and showed a determination to prove that the loses in the previous week were nothing but a minor glitch, the goals that followed from Oscar were fully deserved the team played with a new found belief and the 2-0 win was a fair result.

Fireflies scorch local rivals 5-0 February 23, 2009

With the weather holding off the Fireflies kicked off the season with a local derby at home to maresfield, never one for being able to understand why the fixtures secretary schedules games for the school holiday at this age group absences from holidays were always going to affect us. Martin had several players missing but was able to put in a strong team.
The opening goal looked as it was going to come sooner than it did with the maresfield back line struggling to clear the ball far enough up field before the next wave of attacks came, The opener came after some quick one twos from George Broad and and Ben Lloyd, Grasshoppers looked strong down the right of midfield causing problems for the maresfield defenders and playing a couple of delightful crosses into the box one of which found Ben who played the ball back to the midfield to calmly finish in the bottom corner 2-0 up and 6 minutes gone saw a flurry of subs by this time the partner ship of Love and Broad in Midfield had a firm hold of the game as the stroked the ball around finding their man every time. The defence not sure why the ball had not really got to them yet pushed on and looked to get involved, close the gap between the defence and midfield lead to us making some fine passes and blocks with Danny looking like he’d been a Grasshopper for years and not just making his debut and it was his thrusting pass to George who cut inside and found Ben Lloyd unmarked in the box to open his account. 3-0 at half time saw more subs as the manager tried players in new positions. The team talk was good stuff the manager spoke about how pleased he was with the performance and not to let it drop as the team went out for the second half. From the whistle it was Grasshoppers who took the game to maresfield and Ben was in the mood to score a few more he would have numerous chances to add to his tally as the boys played flowing football from front to back Callum Horscroft hardly touched the ball in goal but when called upon tidied everything up and launch some booming kicks into the Mares half. on a rare attack marefield got court out as they searched for their opener and a ball over the top from Steady Eddie Love saw Lloyd race onto the ball and smash the ball past the on rushing keeper, Ben finished his Hat rick not soon after with a left foot finish after good work from George, The game finished 5-0 but the Maresfield Keeper was excellent saving numerous times and kept his team in it. A great performance from the Fireflies who have benefited from the extra training and looked sharp and hungry for the ball.
